Freeway Fun

Tue Jun 6, 2006, 7:07 AM
So lately I've been setting the bar higher for unsafe road driving. Significantly higher, in fact.
Let me begin with the first night:
It was a few weeks ago, midnight, pitch black. They're been doing construction around my area for the past few months and will continue to do so until the end of the year - working on a new tunnel. This has caused havoc among the roads around here, and they frequently divert traffic onto other roads and sometimes onto the other side of the road.
I was trying to turn onto the onramp for the freeway to the city. The onramp was closed off, but there was a nice lady there with a flashing wand. She waved the wand in the direction of the offramp (oncoming traffic), so I turned down there. Now don't get me wrong, I've lived here for 15 years... I knew it was the offramp, but they've been doing all sorts of weird shit with the roads lately, and she pointed me in this direction. I stop, to make sure she's not running after me trying to get me to turn back or something - nothing in my rear view. I keep going, leave the offramp and end up on the freeway, not a car in sight. I keep driving, and about 200m later I notice cars start coming at me... Wow.
Anyway, There was a break in the median strip further down and I moved onto the correct side of the road. That was fun.
Last night, I got a frantic call from mum telling me she'd run out of petrol - I got a jerry can for her, and headed for the freeway she'd stopped on. She was on the other side of the road, but there was a median strip seperating us, so basically I had to keep going past her, take an exit, get back on the freeway, and come down on her side. This would have been great except that there was a set of toll booths just up from where she'd broken down, so we had to pay in BOTH directions to use 100m of the freeway. Great.
Anyway, we turned around, and got back on the freeway, paid the toll again, and I found myself straight on an exit (an exit before my mum's car, that is). I stopped, in the middle of the exit thinking "WTF? How do I get off this exit??! How did I get ON this exit in the first place?" (Keep in mind it was pitch black and raining, and this is NOT the freeway from the first story that's near me, I'm unfamiliar with this one). While I was stopped trying to work out what to do, there were cars starting to appear behind me, so I kept going forward, and left the freeway. I drove around for a bit trying to find a way back onto the freeway, but I must've taken some crazy exit where all the streets are dead-ends, because I couldn't see any way back on. I ended up driving back up to the exit I had taken, reversing DOWN the exit, and then driving the car over the median strip that seperated the exit from the rest of the freeway.
We got mum's car started again, and we headed home.

What's the moral of this story?
TO HELL WITH ROAD RULES!!
